Aleppo Soap and the Laurel-Oil Tradition

Few soaps carry their history as plainly as Aleppo soap. Cut one open and the heart is the colour of old olive groves — a soft golden-green — while the weathered rind has gone the brown of dry earth. That contrast is the signature of a method that has changed remarkably little across many centuries, and it begins with two oils pressed from the same Mediterranean landscape.

Two oils, one tradition

The body of the soap is built almost entirely from olive oil, the humble, abundant fat of the region. What sets Aleppo soap apart is the addition of laurel berry oil — pressed from the fruit of the bay laurel — added near the end of the cook. Laurel oil is precious and slow to gather, so the proportion in the kettle has always signalled quality: a modest share for an everyday wash, a generous share for something closer to a luxury.

Laurel lends more than scent. It gives the bar its faintly resinous, herbal aroma and a reputation, carried down through generations, as a gentle soap kindly disposed toward sensitive and troubled skin. We pass that lore along as lore, not as a medical promise.

How it was made in the great vats

Traditional Aleppo soap is a hot-process soap. In the old workshops, olive oil and an alkaline lye were brought together in enormous sunken vats and cooked low and slow, often for days, while the soap master judged readiness by eye, hand and taste. The laurel oil was stirred in at the close.

The finished paste was poured out across a paper-lined floor, left to set, then cut into cubes with a toothed rake and stamped with the maker's seal. The bars were stacked in airy towers and left to cure for months — sometimes the better part of a year. That long rest is what turns the olive-brown surface and mellows the bar into something hard, mild and long-lasting.

Honouring the method at home

You can pay tribute to this tradition in a modern kitchen, but the chemistry deserves real respect. Historically the alkali came from plant ashes; today most makers reach for sodium hydroxide. If you want the old route, our guide to making lye from wood ash walks through it.

Whichever lye you use, the cardinal rule never changes: always add lye to water, never water to lye, and add it slowly. Work in a ventilated space and wear goggles and gloves — the solution is caustic and heats sharply. Please read our full soap safety guide before you begin.

Olive oil is slow to saponify and laurel oil is costly, so treat every figure as an estimate. Run your recipe through a lye calculator, build in a little superfat for mildness, and make a small test batch first. The old masters earned their judgement over years at the vat; a careful test bar is how we begin to earn ours.
