Citric Acid, Chelators and Hard Water

If your bars feel slick, dull early, or leave a grey film in hard-water washing, the culprit is rarely your recipe and often your tap. The old apothecaries chased the same ghost without a name for it. We can name it now: metal ions, chiefly calcium, magnesium and traces of iron, that drift in with hard water and react with soap to form an insoluble scum. A chelator is simply a substance that grabs those wandering ions and holds them quietly out of mischief.

What citric acid actually does

Citric acid, a mild fruit acid sold as fine white crystals, is the gentlest chelator on the soapmaker’s shelf. Once stirred into your water, it binds the hard-water metals and the iron that can turn a pale bar faintly orange over the months. The reward is steadier lather, a cleaner rinse, and oils that resist going rancid — those dreaded amber specks soapmakers call the dreaded orange spots.

How much to use

A little goes a long way. Most makers settle between 0.5 and 2 percent of their oil weight; one percent is a sensible place to begin. Dissolve it fully in your water before the lye goes in, never sprinkled onto the finished batter where it will only blotch.

The extra lye it quietly demands

Here is the catch that trips up newcomers. Citric acid is an acid, and your lye is a base, so the two neutralise each other. Every gram of citric acid consumes a measure of sodium hydroxide before it ever reaches your oils — roughly 0.6 g of NaOH per gram of citric acid (closer to 0.84 g if you soap with potassium hydroxide). Skip that adjustment and you have effectively raised your superfat, leaving a softer, under-cleansing bar.

So add that neutralising amount back to your total lye. A word on lye safety

Because this recipe nudges your lye upward, handle it with the usual respect. Always add lye to water, never water to lye — the reverse can erupt and spit.
