Short answer: yes, lye is dangerous — and yes, thousands of people make soap with it safely every day. Both things are true. The difference is respect and a handful of non-negotiable habits.
What lye actually is
Soap is the product of a reaction between fats and a strong alkali. For hard bar soap that alkali is sodium hydroxide (NaOH, "caustic soda"); for soft and liquid soap it is potassium hydroxide (KOH). Both are highly caustic: they cause chemical burns on skin, can permanently damage eyes, and react with aluminium to release flammable hydrogen gas.
The one rule you never break
Always add lye to water — never water to lye. Pouring water onto dry lye can make it erupt. The solution also heats to near boiling within seconds, so mix in a heat-safe, non-aluminium container and stand back from the rising fumes.
Your safety kit
- Splash goggles and chemical-resistant gloves. Long sleeves, closed shoes.
- Good ventilation — lye gives off fumes when it first meets water.
- Stainless steel, HDPE plastic, or heat-rated glass. Never aluminium.
- A clear, child- and pet-free workspace, with everything labelled.
- Running water nearby to flood any splash immediately.
Why every recipe starts with a test batch
